Smith Receives MOSPRA Distinguished Service Award

The Missouri School Public Relations Association (MOSPRA) has named Stephanie Smith, Director of Communications for the Fort Osage School District, the 2021 Distinguished Service Award recipient.  The Distinguished Service Award goes to a MOSPRA member who has provided outstanding leadership and service to the association over the course of his or her career.

MOSPRA President, Kelly Wachel, commented, “Stephanie is one of MOSPRA’s ‘go-to’ people for many things. She is a trusted confidante and in always willing to give of her time and experience to help others.”

In his letter of nomination, former MOSPRA President, Jill Filer, wrote, “Stephanie has been an asset for her district as a respected and trusted advisor to the superintendent, a voice of calm and reason in times of crisis, and supporter and cheerleader for her district’s staff and teachers. Beyond her district, Stephanie is a mentor and friend to so many MOSPRA pros including me. She never hesitates to lend a helping hand or offer words of advice.  She is strategic in all she does and her guidance is straightforward and honest.”

While Stephanie has served as a Board Member and Past President, it is her work as the Accredited in Public Relations (APR) Chair that gained her a legion of admirers.

Annie Dickerson, APR, of the Parkway School District, wrote, “I would not have taken on this goal [APR} without this group and was confident the support from Stephanie and other colleagues would hold me accountable to my goal. This study cohort was indeed the key to my success and Stephanie’s leadership and expertise made it possible. During this time, Stephanie reviewed my APR presentation, offered excellent advice, feedback and continually provided resources. She helped me understand the process and connected me with others who could offer critical perspective and feedback.”

MOSPRA Executive Director, David Luther, said, “When the Distinguished Service Award was created in 2019, it was to honor those professionals who continually share their time and talents with the association.  MOSPRA is one of the strongest state chapters in the country in part because of the selfless leadership of Stephanie Smith.”
